For any of you mountain bikers, hikers or equestrians, Jefferson County Open Space has a new addition to its park system – Centennial Cone Park. I recently hiked from the park’s north access trailhead which is located about 9 miles up Golden Gate Canyon off Highway 93 just north of Golden. This trailhead is about 35 minutes from I-70 and Ward Rd. The park opened about a year ago but has use restrictions in the winter due to elk calving and migration patterns. The park also has an innovative alternating use plan to separate hikers and bikers on the weekends. Each weekend day either is solely for hikers or solely for bikers so check the online schedule before you go. Each weekday is mixed use.
Centennial Cone is one of the larger parks within the JCOS system and currently has a large loop trail about 12 miles in length with some additional smaller connecting loops. I hiked the southern section of the trail, which at about 7,500 feet in elevation goes through both wooded areas and open fields. The views both east (back into the city) and west are stunning. The northern section of the trail appears popular with mountain bikers as it appears to be mostly open field terrain from the north access trailhead.
